The US Census ranks Lee County among the 25 Fastest Growing Counties in the nation. The Southwest Florida County gained nearly 30,000 people from 2004-2005, ranking it 10th largest in population increase and 22nd in percentage increase among counties in the nation.

From 2000 to 2006, Lee County's population increased by almost 150,000 topping out at over 580,000, putting it among the top for percentage and numerical increases, according to the latest census figures. By 2010, Florida will be the third most populous state in the country, overtaking New York and trailing only California and Texas. By 2020, Lee County will have more than 800,000 people.

The region’s exponential growth rate and sound planning initiatives are capturing the national spotlight:

 

  • Inc. Magazine ranked Cape Coral-Fort Myers among the “Best Cities for Business” (April 2007)
  • Expansion Management ranked Cape Coral/Fort Myers MSA as a top Mid-Sized “Economic Development Hot Spot” where business stands the best chance of growing and prospering.
  • The US Census Bureau ranked the Cape Coral-Fort Myers MSA as the 3rd fastest growing metropolitan area in the country between 2000 and 2006.
